My name is McKinna Barnes and I am currently in 10th grade at High Tech High North County. For the Winter/Spring 2017 semester, I am taking Humanities with Ms. Heller, Math with Dr. Drew, and Visual Art with Ms. Shani. I like to stay busy and challenged, so I have a variety of extracurricular activities and I am involved in many clubs as a Raptor. The clubs I participate in are Student Ambassadors, Open Outreach, Club for Animal Rights and Education (C.A.R.E.), S.T.E.M. 2.0, Children's Charity Club, and Life Sciences. I am also in ASB and currently have the roll of 10th Grade Senator. I helped start-up a school business (and am considered a CEO) named Forte Apparel, where we make shirts either designed by our team or a specific order request, and all proceeds go directly to HTHNC's arts program. Whether it is a school play, art supplies, or camera equipment, the money helps fund anything the teacher needs in order to give their class the best learning experience possible. My current extracurriculars include volunteering at the San Diego Zoo in a teen program called Zoo Corps, where I educate zoo guests about wildlife conservation and exhibit biofacts such as a black bear skull, flamingo pellets, puzzle feeders, California condor feathers, and composting bins. I also have an internship at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. There I help run whale watching cruises and AFL's (Advanced Floating Labs) on the RV Sea Explorer. During this year long internship, I will conduct a research project on water quality/plankton. The research will be collected from the ocean water and examined in the lab at the Ocean Institute. I hope you enjoy the work on my Digital Portfolio!
