All the Bright Places
Mental Health
This project was titled All the Bright Places, based off of the book we read. This project was all about mental health, disorders, and illnesses. In Humanities, we worked in pairs or alone to research a specific mental disorder. I worked in a pair, and our mental disorder was REM Sleep Disorder. REM Sleep Disorder is when people act out violent dreams in their sleep. But, they don't know it is happening, and they don't remember their dreams. This means that during their sleep they commit acts without knowing or understanding what is happening. From our research, this disorder is very uncommon, only affecting less than 1% of the (reported) population. It often occurs in older men, but anyone can be affected. The violence that occurs can be controlled with medicine, but it often turns into sleep walking, eating, talking, etc. Since we can't monitor dreams or our brain during sleep, REM Sleep Disorder is hard to research. Therefore, we do not know what causes it, only what it relates to. Some connections scientists have made were Parkinson's disease and even Alzheimer's.But, more scientists are conducting research that will hopefully give us answers in the future.
Throughout this project I have gained knowledge through most subjects in school. In Humanities, I learned how to thoroughly research my disorder and write a proper case report on REM Sleep Disorder. I also learned how to creatively write about a woman with REM Sleep Disorder, which allowed me to explore a wide variety of paths I could take to finish the story and complete it with more imagination than facts. Both the creative writing piece and the case report have improved my writing skills in different ways that will help me in the future, such as writing about a disorder in case I need to write another research paper, and creative writing is a part of every English class that I will be taking, so it plays an important role in my education. I feel that this project has given me knowledge I should continue to gain, which I will continue on doing.
Overall, I think this project was a success. I worked well with my partner, and we collaborated and compromised on a diverse amount of changes. I also think our research was explained well to the extent that anyone could understand it, and that it included correct information. Our art therapy was a success, and that was our exhibition, so our exhibition went perfectly. Although our art therapy didn't directly correlate to our disorder, we made it work, and everyone that went to our booth enjoyed it.
